The area of the Moroccan province of Tangier is 1.200 square kilometres.
The city of Tangier is located in the west of the Gibraltar strait, and is dominated by a vast bay. More people enter Morocco through its port than any other; in fact, it is the largest port in the country in terms of cargo and passenger transportation. Tangier, which now has 600.000 inhabitants according to its census, has been a meeting point for many cultures throughout history and for numerous artists from all over the world.
The city of Tingis (Tangier) was founded in the IV century B.C. and, due to its strategic location, Vandals, Spanish, Portuguese, English, etc. The most splendid period of the city was during the first half of the XX century, when the international administration of the city contributed to its development and to its lively cultural life.
The Petit Zocco in the centre of the city, close to the large mosque, is one of the main places of interest. In the past, when Tangier was an international neutral zone, this area had a cosmopolitan environment, which it still hasn't completely lost. It has the Makhzen of Dar from the XVII century, the palace of the previous sultan and that now has been transformed into a good museum. The museum of the American legislation is a reminder of how Morocco was the first country to recognize American independence. Tangier is five hours away by train from Rabat, and at a short journey by boat from Spain and Gibraltar.
It is also worth visiting the Bab Erraha, the door to the walls, that gives access to a hill over the bay and the Grand Zoco, dominated by the minaret of the mosque Sidi Bou Abid.
You also should not miss the gardens of the Sultan and those of the Mendoubia, the caves of Hercules - where limestone used to be extracted for the windmills-, the beautiful mansions from the beginning of the century and the small cafés of Boulevard Pasteur.
On the outskirts of Tangier, it is recommendable to go to Cape Espartel, from where it is possible to contemplate the union of the two seas: the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and to Cape Malabata.
